Saint-Pierre: the former capital of Martinique

Founded in the seventeenth century, Saint-Pierre quickly became Martinique’s main economic and cultural centre. Its active port and the sugar economy helped make it the island’s de facto capital until the early twentieth century.

Saint-Pierre was a dynamic and highly developed town for its time, with theatres, printing houses and modern infrastructure.

On 8 May 1902, a pyroclastic flow from Mount Pelée destroyed Saint-Pierre within minutes. The disaster killed almost the entire population and left a lasting mark on the history of the French Caribbean.

Today, the ruins remain visible and form an essential part of Martinique’s historical heritage.
